Day Trips from Boston

One of the best things about Boston is how much of New England sits within easy reach. In an hour or two you can be standing where the Revolution began, walking the streets of the witch trials, boarding a replica of the Mayflower or watching the ferry pull into a Martha's Vineyard harbor.

Here are the trips we recommend most, with what makes each one special. For families and small groups, a private driver-guide is often the most comfortable way to see them, and we are happy to help plan a longer itinerary.

Salem: witches, sea captains and October like nowhere else

In 1692, a wave of panic swept through Salem Village and the surrounding towns. Before it ended, 20 people had been executed for witchcraft. The Salem Witch Trials Memorial and the city's museums tell that story with care.

Salem is also one of America's great old seaports. Its captains sailed to China and the East Indies, and their treasures became the Peabody Essex Museum, one of the oldest continuously operating museums in the country. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born here, and the House of the Seven Gables, built in 1668, inspired his famous novel. In October the whole city celebrates Haunted Happenings, a month of Halloween festivities. The ferry from Boston takes about 50 minutes and runs seasonally.

Lexington and Concord: where the Revolution began

On April 19, 1775, British troops marched out of Boston to seize colonial weapons in Concord. Militia met them on Lexington Green at dawn, and a few hours later, at Concord's Old North Bridge, the colonists fired what Ralph Waldo Emerson called the shot heard round the world. Minute Man National Historical Park preserves the Battle Road between the two towns.

Concord is also America's literary hometown. Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne all lived here. You can visit Alcott's Orchard House, where she wrote Little Women, and walk around Walden Pond.

Plymouth: America's hometown

About 40 miles south of Boston, Plymouth is where the Pilgrims landed in 1620. Mayflower II, a full-size replica of their ship, is docked on the waterfront, and Plimoth Patuxet Museums bring to life both the English colony and the Wampanoag homesite. Plymouth Rock is a short walk away. It is a great day trip for families and history lovers.

Cape Cod, the Islands and the coast

Martha's Vineyard. Take the ferry for a day of gingerbread cottages in Oak Bluffs, whaling captains' houses in Edgartown and some of the prettiest beaches in New England.

Cape Ann. Gloucester, America's oldest seaport, and the art colony of Rockport are about an hour north. Add Hammond Castle, a medieval-style castle built on the cliffs in the 1920s.

Newport, Rhode Island. About 90 minutes south, the Gilded Age mansions of the Vanderbilts and their friends line the ocean along the Cliff Walk.

Fall foliage. From late September to mid-October, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the hills of Vermont and western Massachusetts put on one of the world's great color shows.
